A Design Model of Smart and Persuasive Technology-based Toilet System for Deployments in Developing African Nations

Abstract

This era of cutting edge technologies has provided several alternatives for carrying out tasks in smarter ways; especially in performing odd and hazardous tasks such as sewage disposals, nuclear waste disposals, mining operation and military operation. The development of ambient intelligence systems has provided ease and safety for those responsible for carrying out these tasks. So, cleanliness of these environments is very paramount because of the attendant consequences of uncleanliness to the health of the inhabitants. This research sought to uncover the factors promoting the unhygienic nature of public toilets facilities in developing African nations. These research employed interview and observation methods. This study was able to uncover the promoting factors. These factors were clearly discussed with their technological design implications outlined with proper concurrence with some established designs. Finally, the research was concluded with notable design recommendations to help in the operationalization of the model proposed in this research.
