A NIN-BASED MODEL FOR SOCIAL MEDIA SECURITY IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Social media has been instrumental to a number of positive paradigm shift in business, governance, financial, religious etc. However, the promising opportunities provided by social media is often threatened by uncontrolled access to inappropriate contents, online predators, cyber bullying and fake news.  Although, security such as Google Family Link or mobile-based software offers some relief, peers often bypassed these methods through online information that indicated the loopholes in the algorithm. In this paper, a National Identity Number (NIN)-based model is presented to enhanced social media security in Nigeria. The NIN model is a three-phased method consisting of the Registration Phase, Service Approval Phase and Service Monitoring Phase. The Registration phase is used to generate the social media authentication database for registered NIN subscribers. The database is then forwarded to Service Approval Phase. This phase uses an algorithm called CensorNigeria (CN) which determines the allowed social contents based on Incremental Age Algorithm (IAA). The algorithms determine the viewing, sharing, reading and requesting permission of a citizen. The final phase of model is the Service Monitoring which determine the level of intrusion or violations from a particular client. This is necessary in order to harness the expected threats from unsatisfied citizen into building an updated secured version of the approach. By integrating this approach into the Internet Service Provider system in Nigeria, the expected national filter to secure social media management among the populace especially the teens are achieved.
