ANALYSIS OF NETWORK TRAFFIC METRICS FOR THE BENEFIT OF SMART SOCIETY

ABSTRACT

Low Internet connection is a major problem for both subscribers and service providers in which cases packets are heavily delayed on transmission and this delays could result to failure in critical operations. Hence, optimization of Internet service for higher speed is necessary to both service providers and end-users who needs to utilize their Internet connections and to understand how to measure and analyse their Internet traffic characteristics. This work primarily focused on Internet traffic speed measurement using Local Area Network (LAN) systems, and methods of analysing  network traffic metrics like; availability, latency, packet loss, packet delay and throughput in an active and passive network states. Experimental method was used on a LAN topology with standard ping and traceroute command tools with Cisco NetFlow/packet tracer systems to measure packet transmission intervals. Test results shows that; the percentage of a time interval during which a system is available or fully connected for normal use may depend on the physical connection of the network elements if the associative elements performs well.
