DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A MOBILE UNIVERSITY CRIME WATCH PORTAL
ABSTRACT
Currently, the Security departments of higher institutions in Nigeria are practicing manual crime management and this results to lack of substantial evidence and indeed inefficiency of the system. Following the past records of insurgents’ attacks and other internal social vices on campuses, there is need for proactive measures on securing lives and property on campuses. University Crime watch (UCW) is a system which tracks criminal actions by enabling members of the university community communicate all ill-actions on campus to the university security department. The effectiveness of the campus security system depends on how instant crime information is received by security personnel. Therefore, this paper aims at developing a mobile institutional-based real-time University Crime watch for crime prevention, detection and control. This work intends to provide an immediate alerting signal to the University security and capture all reported crimes and criminals’ information. The methodology used is object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) while Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the analysis tool. MYSQLite is deployed for data collection and storage. The programming Language tools adopted include: HTML, CSS, SQL, JAVASCRIPT and JAVA. The effective utilization of the system will enhance the productivity of the campus security personnel and improve safety.
