Design and Implementation of Parking Allocation System Using Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Near Field Communication: A Case of University of Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract.

Effective parking allocation plays a crucial role in optimizing traffic flow and reducing congestion during events like convocation ceremonies at the University of Lagos. This paper proposed a novel approach to address this challenge by using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to develop an intelligent parking allocation system that efficiently assigns available parking spaces to incoming vehicles ahead of time. The PSO algorithm, inspired by the collective behaviour of bird flocking or fish schooling, optimizes the allocation process. The NFC technology facilitates seamless communication between vehicles and parking infrastructure. Each user is equipped with an NFC tag that communicates with NFC devices used by service personnel in parking spaces. The utilization of the PSO algorithm and NFC technology demonstrates the potential of combining optimization techniques and communication technologies for intelligent parking allocation systems. This reduces traffic congestion and improves user satisfaction. The results obtained from this paper contribute to the development of smart transportation solutions in the university community.
