DEVELOPMENT OF AN ACCENTED CHARACTER-BASED EAN-13 BARCODE ALGORITHM

ABSTRACT

A Barcodes depict data visually so that it can be processed by a computer. Barcodes have been used in different and diverse industries like retail stores and libraries. In this study a barcode algorithm that can detect and decode 1D barcode using EAN- 13 was developed. This study used the experimental approach to enhance the EAN-13 algorithm with accented characters for data representation. A desktop and the mobile application were developed to implement the algorithm. The algorithm was tested with Yoruba film titles with perfect results. The same can be done with Igbo and Hausa language titled-films using the developed algorithm.
