ABSTRACT:
In an attempt to bring convenience into banking and also to ensure availability of banking activities to customers at all time, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) was introduced. The introduction of ATM came with its merits and demerits. Since Automated Teller Machines can be installed by banks at any location where customer can use them to perform banking transactions at any time of the day, security became an issue. Currently in Nigeria, the most widely used security technique for ATM is PINs or passwords. This type of security measure is not reliable enough to guarantee the kind of security needed by banks and bank customer since a customer’s PIN can easily be stolen and used by another person. The use of proper biometric solutions will help significantly to reduce identity thefts and also provide great benefits to the economy. The most successful way in which biometrics can be used to enhance security is to incorporate multi-factor authentication as it would reduce risk by involving different types of factors. Though, various biometric technologies such as iris, finger, voice, wrist etc. are currently being used on a global scale in developed countries but such have not being implemented in Nigeria. The authors of this paper reviewed the proposed security techniques with a view to identifying problems associated with them and also to come up with a better solution. In this paper, we proposed a simple ATM security system that uses PIN and an option of finger prints or face recognition for authentication. This proposed system has the capabilities of providing the needed security and also eliminates delay common in some systems that compulsorily require the authentication of two or more biometric factors. Object Oriented Design and Modeling Methodology was used in modeling our system and the implementation was done in JAVA programming language.
