ABSTRACT
ATM security is a very sensitive area that should not be neglected because of the huge financial loss that accompanies any ATM robbery. Though, meaningful efforts have been made by researchers and industries in recommending security measures to possible ATM attacks such as skimming, pin cracking, hacking etc., but additional security measures is still required in the area of ATM physical attack for Nigerian banks. Attacks on ATM are prevalence in rural areas where ATM facilities are isolated. From the events happening around us in this part of the world, there is need to strengthen the physical security of ATM machines which are widely used by customers for bank transactions. This paper seeks to address physical security problem of ATM by designing a system that will guard against burglary and ram raid. The system comprises of impact sensors, digital image sensor camera, GSM module, trigger switch sensor and GPS receiver. The impact sensors and the digital image sensor camera are used for sensing vibration on the ATM and for capturing images around the ATM machine respectively during attack. The GPS tracks the location of the particular ATM being attacked while the GSM sends alert message to the designated security agency close to the scene of attack for urgent response. Most of these physical attacks on ATM machines around the country could have been forestalled, if the attack information was automatically sent to the security agency close to the scene. The proposed system is equipped with required facilities to detect tampering on the ATM machine and send alert information to the rescue agency for prompt response. The coordination of the entire system is performed by a microcontroller. The proposed security system was simulated using Proteus software.
