Sensor-Based Waste Management System for Biogas Detection

Abstract:

There have been various studies on smart waste management systems, but the most focus has been on monitoring and disposal of the waste bin when full, without accounting for the fact that before a bin is filled up, there might be solid waste materials deposited in it, which might decay and produce biogases. Hence, a system to monitor garbage fill level and most importantly, detect biogases is proposed. The system is integrated with an Arduino microcontroller which is interfaced with ultrasonic sensors to measure the fill level of the bin, an MQ-4 gas sensor to detect biogas, GSM module to transmit bin status via SMS and to an online database. The database can be accessed via a web application to view the real time status of the bin. Evaluation metrics were employed to assess system effectiveness. The process was carried out by comparing the proposed system to another system ―Real Time Solid Waste Management System using Solar Energy‖ which is the most similar and recent system reviewed. The evaluation's findings indicate that the proposed system did better in metric factors such as user-friendliness, page responsiveness, hardware durability, biogas detection presence and a lower cost of production.
