ABSTRACT:
The increasing population size of the number of people who live in cities have necessitated the need for new technology that will improve city transportation, water and waste management, energy usage and lots more of infrastructural facilities. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now an essential part of human interaction and means of livelihood in cities. Smart city through the use of ICT tools have increased operational efficiency of government, share information with the public and improve quality of services and welfare of citizens. Though this global innovation will be the most important challenge over the next few decades, necessity beholds on information technology experts to rethink citizens’ way of life and provide a city that is smart. This paper examined key technology trends that are shaping the world around us and compared these trends with the state of Nigerian cities to examine our level of preparedness for cities that are truly smart.
