Smart Monitoring System for Detection of Vandalism of Oil and Gas Pipeline

ABSTRACT:

Pipeline infrastructure is one of the major means of transporting fluids, especially hydrocarbons; oil and gas resources in Nigeria, in which unresolved problems in pipeline facilities and their operations could result into unimaginable economic loss, environmental pollution and degradation, and loss of human lives. These problems majorly include theft of pipeline content and terrorism attack both involving pipeline vandalism. The aim of this work is the development of a proactive smart remote monitoring system for monitoring and detection of vandalism of oil and gas pipeline using wireless sensor network, GSM module, and GPS interconnected on Arduino board and integrated on pipeline. Quantitative and experimental research methods was used to determine the amount of applied force F ≥ 10N applied on pipes of 6mm (0.25inch) thickness by vandals to cause leakage on the pipeline. Thereafter, Visual Studio IDE, and MS Access RDBMS were used to develop Smart Monitoring System for detection of vandalism of Oil and Gas pipeline.
