Abstract:
The skyrocketing population growth rate in Nigeria stresses the need for the adoption of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for effective monitoring of vehicular traffic. This is necessary to proffer solutions to challenges that are associated with road transport management in Nigeria.
A wholistic approach was adopted and presented in order to unravel some of the identified challenges. In this work, data collection was carried out via observation and literature search. As an improvement on some existing similar works, multipurpose smart card was adopted to function and communicate with other electronic components so as to leverage on the rigor of manual recording and processing of traffic offences as this is prone to error. In addition, the proposed system flow supports interoperability and online payment.
Smart city model was adopted to make provision for the smart card implementation of its various components. In practice, smart card with big data has been used for urban travel planning, forecasting, industrial and academic research and so on. However, this work is more related to the significance of a distributed repository using the Hadoop Data File System which comes handy in storing large volumes of data; hence Internet of things, big data analytics and smart city are all data driven.
