Abstract:
Scalability aspect has become the main concern while making any technology selection, as it is necessary to know which one can continue to meet its throughput objectives irrespective the increase or de-crease in data elements used. Scalability is a desirable attribute of a network, system, or process. Poor scalabil-ity can result in poor system performance, necessitating the reengineering or duplication of systems. The availa-bility of different DBMS in the market is making it harder to make the right choice. The choice could be between SQL, a relational database system and so called NoSQL, a non–relational database system. Each of these two systems provides user with a unique database system model that is better at solving particular problems. This research presents a new benchmark for evaluation of these DBMS with respect to their characteristics, context and their limitations. This is to assist practitioners in selecting the best available DBMSs based on their suita-bility for a particular task and equally providing re-searchers with the main challenges and limitations that require further investigation.
