9FoodReKG: An Extensible Ontology for Food Safety Regulations

ABSTRACT

Knowledge silos present an ongoing challenge in managing food safety due to the variety of agencies, ministries and departments that are responsible for food safety in Nigeria, leading to a proliferation of overlapping regulations and regulatory agencies. This paper presents an extensible Knowledge Graph based on Nigerian Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) food regulations called 9FoodReKG. The paper proposes a regulatory ontology and a query framework that permits semantic queries, retrieval of structured data, and access to the full regulation text. The aim is the development of a schema that allows for accurate graph path expansions on complex queries. Along with providing access to structured knowledge bases, it is essential that graphs for regulatory compliance tasks are extensible to accommodate regulations from other related agencies or whenever regulations are updated with new versions. The 9FoodReKG backend was implemented using Neo4j, while the front end was built with Streamlit providing a clean user interface. The code, database cypher and associated materials are available at: https://github.com/adkwanashie/9FoodReKG
