A SMART-BASED DUSTBIN FOR OFFICE WASTE MANAGEMENT

ABSTRACT

Waste generation is an everyday issue in virtually all human environments. Research studies in recent times are centred on effective waste management for a safe environment. In this paper, a smart-based dustbin is designed for office waste management. The dustbin is equipped with a sensor that automatically opens when waste paper is detected. This is achieved with an Arduino board equipped with a microcontroller. The design methodology uses Bluetooth technology for data monitoring with the garbage container. This design is enhanced with an ultrasonic sensor that generates high-frequency sound waves when the dustbin is filled based on a metering computation from the software that monitors the waste level. In addition, the dustbin used an odour sensor to detect some specific nauseating odours. The design was evaluated with a usability experiment based on four key performance metrics. The experimental process provided an average of 80% of participants' approval of the proposed system.  Thus, the proposed smart dustbin is suited for safe office waste management.
