ACADEMIC STAFF ACCEPTANCE AND USE OF SMART DEVICES TECHNOLOGY DURING LESSON DELIVERY

ABSTRACT

The Era of information revolution is fast being promoted and enabled by devices that are smart. The devices are so addictive to the extent that their owners can hardly keep far away from them at their work places or learning centers. Hence, the ‘distractive’ term associated with these devices. Smart phone is leading device in that perspective. Being portable and easy to use the smart phones with their applications are permanent companions to majority of their users. Also, smart phone Internet readiness have made it a tool for everything. Student during lectures use the smart phone for quick search and access to information. In this paper a survey was carried out to find the academic staff perceived and acceptance of the use of smart devices in their lectures. Then, the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology was used to design and analyze a self-completed questionnaire. The questionnaire was then administered to the academic staff to get their responses on the six factors of the theory. The factors determine the significance of each and combine effect of the factors on the target population. The results indicated that significant relationship amongst the factors. Also, the factors have individually and combined affected the perception and acceptance of the Academic staff to the use of smart phone during lectures. It was observed that if the smart phone are to be allowed for usage during lesson, it has to be done with some strategies that checks the distractive nature of the devices.
