BLOCKCHAIN RESULT AND TRANSCRIPT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: A CASE STUDY OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY OWERRI
ABSTRACT
Result processing and transcript generation are two important processes that are usually carried out in most tertiary institutions in Nigeria. In the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, these activities are carried out by the course department and the record and statistics unit of the University respectively. Blockchain technology on the other hand, has proven to be disruptive in the global economic landscape mostly in industries (such as finance, asset management, healthcare, supply chain management, copyright protection and value exchange services) where security and integrity of data are of utmost importance. Consequently, in this paper we propose to develop an internet-based system for storing students’ results efficiently and securely and generating result transcripts promptly using Blockchain technology. The system would be implemented using an Ethereum based blockchain for securely holding the hashes of students’ results. A Solidity based smart contract would also be developed to code subroutines for writing to the blockchain, accessing result hashes stored using the SHA-256 hashing algorithm, performing integrity check on students’ results and generating transcripts securely from the blockchain. The System interface is implemented using HTML and CSS, while the backend communication with the blockchain is achieved using Node.js.
