CHANNEL CAPACITY IMPROVEMENT FOR WIDEBAND CODE DIVISION MULTIPLE ACCESS MOBILE CELLULAR TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK USING SECTORIZATION TECHNIQUES

ABSTRACT

Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is a third generation (3G) mobile cellular telecommunications network system that utilizes WCDMA air interface technology, commonly referred to as a wideband code division multiple access communication system. This study improved channel capacity of a WCDMA cellular network by considering intra-cell interference parameters and soft handover factors against the uplinks capacity on sectorizations systems. The sectorization technique uses a directional antenna system to reduce the number of interfering users. A drive test experiment was conducted and data were obtained from the Branch of MTN office Kano State, Nigeria. Matlab2015a were used to analysed the data. The result shows that as the number of intra–cell interference is reducing in the WCDMA system the numbers of users that access the system will also increase and allow more users to access the system and the value of soft handover factor needs to maintain higher value for increasing the number of users in the WCDMA system. Improving cell capacity will allow more mobile users to access WCDMA system, making optimal use of the available static resource spectrum (channels). Therefore, efficient mobility management in WCDMA network system were achieved.
