PERSONAL DATA AND PRIVACY PROTECTION: STATE OF LITERATURE

ABSTRACT

The proliferation of the use of data as a result of sophistication in computing technologies is also associated with a growing concern about the abuse of personal data. As the privacy of personal data is one of the fundamental human rights, authorities at different levels and influence formulated regulations to protect it. This paper presented a semi-systematic literature exploration on personal data and privacy protection. Three major themes were found in the literature: (i) Adequacy policies and regulations; (ii) State of compliance with the existing regulations, and (iii) Compliance frameworks. The paper also presented a narrative summary of the research published under the three major themes. In the Nigerian context, not so much was reported about the state of implementing Nigerian Data Protection Regulation in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
