Validity of the Mother Tongue on Students’ Academic Performance using an Evidence-Based Approach

Abstract:

The study assessed the validity of the mother tongue on students’ academic performance in Computer Science. Two of the objectives were to determine if the mother tongue can be used as a method of teaching Computer Science and to evaluate the factors affecting the use of mother tongue in teaching. Three null and alternative research hypotheses were formulated to guide the survey. Five local governments were selected using purposive sampling techniques and one hundred (100) Computer Science teachers were used as respondents. The instrument used was a 5 Likert-scale well-structured questionnaire which consists of 25 questions and was distributed to the respondents. ANOVA means of inferential statistics were used to analyze the data and it was measured at 0.05 level of significance. It was discovered from the findings that all null hypotheses were rejected while all alternate hypotheses were accepted. The conclusion revealed that there is a significant difference in the use of the mother tongue and the economic factors affecting the students, the attitude of the students and the academic performance of the students using mother tongue with female students having the highest population.
