AI HAS AND WILL RESULT IN JOB LOSS: ANOTHER FALLACY OF CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP

ABSTRACT

This paper challenges the deterministic claim that artificial intelligence (AI) will inevitably lead to widespread job loss, arguing instead that such assertions often stem from flawed causal reasoning. Drawing on the fallacy illustrated by Texas State University's elevator example and philosophical insights from Karl Popper and David Hume, the paper critiques the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy embedded in many AI-job loss narratives. It highlights the multifactorial nature of labor market dynamics, emphasizing that job displacement cannot be singularly attributed to AI. While acknowledging valid concerns about automation, the paper underscores that AI also creates new roles and enhances productivity. Ultimately, it advocates for a strategic response that includes reskilling and adaptation, rather than fear or resistance. The analysis concludes that embracing AI and integrating it ethically into work structures is more beneficial than opposing its rise, with the real threat being not AI itself, but an unwillingness to evolve alongside it.
