Digitizing Nigerian Public Bus Transport Using Advanced Travel Information System

ABSTRACT:

Traffic congestion remains a major challenge affecting transportation sector in Nigeria. Though governments have continuously invested in massive road construction and the acquisition of bus rapid transports, yet, the problem persists. This is majorly due to the continuous increase in the number of private cars plying Nigerian roads daily. Consequently, public transport is more efficient than private transport in terms of its occupancy ratio, road space and energy consumption. However, the state of public transports and the quality of services they offered must be improved to encourage an increase in its ridership. With this in view, this article proposes an advanced travel information system which provides passengers with real time travel information such as bus estimated arrival time and bus location. This will help passengers to make informed decision about their journey and eradicate time wasted at bus stops. The travel information was made available in web, mobile and short messaging service platforms.
