LOW-COST INTELLIGENT OBSTACLE DETECTION AND AVOIDANCE IN AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS

ABSTRACT

The development of autonomous robotic systems is becoming more and more important to improve the traffic flow and safety in contemporary transportation. This paper presents a design and implementation of an automated obstacle-detecting robotic vehicle that can avoid collisions in real-time. The system uses a 180° scanning mechanism with a servo motor, powered by an Arduino Uno microcontroller and an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor to scan the environment and thus avoid the use of many fixed sensors. Experimental findings in diverse conditions prove that the average obstacle-detecting and avoiding accuracy is 90 percent in a 15cm threshold. The four-wheel design is faster and more stable than the conventional two-wheel designs.
